Celtic Jewelry – An Unreduced Endowment You Can Give Away

The earliest mention of the Celts goes back to around 400 BC when they came down from the Alps in Northern Italy, defeated the Etruscans and later even humiliated the proud Romans. They thereafter lost influence from around 100 AD and had declined even before the advent of the Vikings. The present day Irish and the Scots are said to have descended from the Celts. Celtic jewelry is mysterious, magical and unique in its designs. The Celts essentially adopted ideas from nature and made motifs which they reproduced in their jewelry articles which were in silver, bronze and gold. The Celtic jewelry discovered and on record are mostly in earrings, bracelets and pendants. At a later date the jewelry of the Celts underwent further improvement by the Irish monks to the status in which they were sought after by merchants.

The motifs in Celtic jewelry were gradually explained. The intricate patterns were in spirals and knots, chevrons and scroll each having an inner meaning. Spirals implied eternity. The famed Celtic cross symbolized an increase in wisdom, knowledge and fortitude. The Celtic knots were to ward off bad spirits. Heart symbolized love and hands were indicative of friendship. The famous Claddagh rings are still sought after at the time of engagements and weddings.

Today’s online shops favor antique Celtic jewelry. There are professional shops which copy antique jewellery very minutely and reproduce these using the same or similar materials. Antique necklaces can be found like the Knot necklace by the Celts from around 700 BC or the Celtic Swirl Pendant from Northern Europe from 500 BC.
